Mahurat Mandap:

At this ceremony, Lord Ganesha, the Hindu god who is said to be able to get rid of any obstacle, is honored. This is done a few days before the wedding by the families of the bride and groom. It is believed that asking for blessings from God before the whole wedding ritual is started is believed to be divinely good and that any obstacle that could arise otherwise is handled by the almighty one.

Jaan:

During this interesting ceremony, the groom goes to the home of the bride to ask her mother for her blessing. As is usual, the groom should bend his head and touch his nose. This shows that he is humble and that he understands what a huge sacrifice his future wife is about to make. Following this cute gesture, the groom’s mother-in-law then gives him blessings and does a few little things as a part of the ritual to keep the evil eye away from him. In return, she also plays with the groom’s nose as a reminder that he is the “taker” as he will be taking away their child, which makes them the givers.

Antarpaat:

This tradition says that the bride’s maternal uncle (mama) should carry the bride to the mandap. The curtain between the bride and groom, called the “Antarpaat,” is then pulled down, and the couple gives each other garlands. This is also one of the most emotional moments,  there are a lot of emotional moments seen on the faces of family members and undoubtedly those precious moments are covered by our Indian wedding photographer Dallas.

Madhuparka:

Madhuparka takes place after the Jaimala ritual. At Madhuparka, the groom’s feet are washed by his sister-in-law. Then honey and milk are brought to him. The most exciting tradition is when the groom’s sisters-in-law steal his shoes and hide them. Almost every Indian wedding has this ceremony. At the end of the day, the groom and his brothers must return the shoes, and in exchange, the groom must give money and other gifts to his sisters-in-law.

Hasta Milap:

During this ritual, the groom’s long scarf is then tied to the saree of the bride. It is done in the name of the two souls united as one in this beautiful relation of marriage. The priest (pandit or accharaya) then chants mantras asking Goddesses Lakshmi and Goddess Parvati to bless the wife (bride).

Followed by this, the families of the newlyweds come forward together to shower their blessing on the couple by throwing grains and rose petals at them.

Kanya-daan:

The kanya daan is the first part of the wedding ceremony. This is when the bride’s parents give the bride to the groom. During the ceremony, they fold their hands to show that they trust their son-in-law to take care of their daughter and never hurt her.

The major part of this ritual begins when the bride and the groom have to take rounds around the holy fire while the priest (pandit/ achharaya) reads the mantras. In addition to the same, the groom also is seen to be repeating the mantras in order to showcase how much he wants his wife to love and support him.

Saptapadi:

This means that they went around the holy fire seven times. The groom keeps singing mantras with each step. These are requests for his wife to take care of the house, cook healthy meals for their family, save money, be a patient and loving partner, and so on. And the bride says she will do what the groom wants.
